Homework #5- Max Dupain

September 30, 2009

Max Dupain  was born in Sydney Australia in 1911 where he lived all his life photographing his city. At the age of 13 Max picked up his first camera and started snapping pictures constantly from there on out. Four years later he won the Carter Memorial Prize for Productive Use of Spare Time, and his career continued to progress from there. Max created a name for himself when he opened a studio in Sydney in 1934. Dupain was mostly interested in photographing architecture, landscape and beaches throughout his hometown.  The beach theme defines Dupain as a photographer, and was his biggest inspiration in helping Max Dupainhim create his most famous pieces, such as “The Sunbaker.” Dupain believed in simplicity and directness, which influenced him to primarily use black and white photography and to emphasize on simple shapes and design of structures.  Dupain continued to take photographs until a few months before his death in 1992.

1. Ancient egyptian architecture such as the pyramid, influenced modern architecture such as this glass pyramid outside the Louvre as well as many other sites throughout the world.

How and why were these elements used in the height of the Northern African culture?

African art had meaning and function in each individual piece. The art depicted youth, emotion, visibility, cycles of life, religious symbols and many more important aspects of their culture. Each piece was designed as a function for ceremonial, sacred or practical use.  Elements and principles of design were presented in almost every piece of African art ranging from emotional proportion, visibility, abstract forms, texture and lines.  The African culture created a unique way to view and compose art, contributing to the development of modern art.

5. Visibility

The clarity of line and form is valued in the African culture in order to give powerful features to images. Visibility is a strong characteristic in African art and influenced European modernists.

4. Cycles of life

This figure functions as the cycle of life in the African culture, which serves as the rites of passage between family members.

This figure is an abstract objective form, interpretating the idea of  many generations in one family. This idea of the cycle of life is something that families still see today by using a family tree to serve as a function in finding the generations in each side of their family.
